The US Department of Education's Federal Student Business Operation Division is looking for recent graduates and students nearing graduation to participate in the Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP). Federal Student Aid's main goal is to ensure that "all eligible Americans benefit from federal financial assistance." We accomplish this by offering various grants, loans, and work-study programs in coordination with postsecondary schools. We oversee $391 billion in outstanding student loans, making us one of the largest financial intermediaries in the world.
Keep in mind, these are full-time ENTRY-LLEVEL positions with benefits such as health insurance, life insurance, sick and vacation leave. During the first two years of the position, participants will be provided with formal training and developmental assignments. Upon completion of the program, participants are eligible for non-competitive conversion to a permanent position with Federal Student Aid.
Qualifications for this position are:
GS-5
A college degree with a major in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering. OR
A college degree that included courses that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems. The coursework is equivalent to a major in the computer field. OR
3 years of experience that provided a basic knowledge of data processing functions and general management principles that enabled the applicant to understand the steps required to automate a work process. This experience may have been gained in jobs such as computer operator or assistant, computer sales representative, program analyst, or other jobs that required the use or adaptation of computer programs and systems. OR
Combination of education and experience.
GS-7 A college degree with a major in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering. In addition, candidate must meet one of the indicators of academic success: graduation in the top third of college, university or major subdivision class (e.g., College of Liberal Arts); GPA was 3.0 out of a possible 4.0 in college coursework or in last 2 years of coursework; A GPA of 3.5 in major or in the last 2 years of courses in major; election to membership in a national honor society, except for freshman honor societies, listed in the Association of College Honor Societies or Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities. OR
A college degree that included courses that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems. The coursework is equivalent to a major in the computer field. In addition, applicant meets one of the more indicators of academic success listed above. OR
Completion of one academic year of graduate education in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering. OR
One year of graduate courses that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems. The coursework is equivalent to one year of graduate coursework in the computer field. OR
52 weeks of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to the GS-5 in the Federal government. (Examples of such experience include: working as an entry-level computer specialist trainee; generating reports from computerized databases; assisting in the inventory, ordering, and maintenance of computer equipment; using word processing or desktop publishing software to produce newsletters or calendars; maintaining electronic bulletin boards; assisting in developing computer debugging techniques; and assisting in developing requirements for computer applications.) OR
Combination of education and experience.
Salaries are for the current year only; cost of living raises for future
years is not included. We are only selecting candidates at GS-5 or GS-7.
This position has promotion potential up to GS-12.
