Talk:Accelerated program for computer science
From MWCSWiki
Questions for our meeting on Monday.
The primary goal is to make it possible for students who receive a BS in Computer Science (BSCPSC) may receive a MS in Management Information Systems (MSMIS) 12 months later.
Questions:
- How do we make it possible for a student to satisfy the the foundation requirements while that student is in the BSCPSC program?
- How do we make it possible for a student to acquire 12 credits (4 courses) counted in the Core or Elective area of the MSMIS and satisfy requirements in the BSCPSC program while that student is in the BSCPSC program?

I originally thought that we could come to an agreement where the 400-level BSCGPS courses would be accepted by CGPS, and I would prefer it if we could do that.
Certainly getting a 5-year program approved that would include using 400-level BSCPSC courses is a possibility, but would take too long. I am interested to see what the opinion of having 500-level BSCPSC courses is at the meeting on Monday.
Here are a couple of ideas I have that could deal with this situation of CGPS not being able to accept the 400-level BSCPSC courses. 1. CGPS lists descriptions of 500-level courses in its catalog that match the description of the 400-level BSCPSC courses with something added. Those courses are taught concurrently with the 400-level BSCPSC courses. 2. CGPS accepts a 400-level BSCPSC course if and only if it is accompanied by a 1-credit BSCPCS individual study on the same topic. --Ernie 10:39, 9 October 2006 (EDT)
Morello's questions, 10/11/2006 w/answers
Here are today's questions, and I apologize for asking so many but I'm just trying to get a grip on what's being proposed.
1. Both tracks could lead to "positioning" a student to complete the separate MS MIS degree in a fifth year?
Correct. --Ernie 22:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
2. The CIS option has one of the cross listed graduate courses being taken during the junior year. Is there agreement in principle on this notion from all parties? As I recall the VT model, the student took the graduate courses after achieving senior status.
I hadn't noticed the course in the Junior year, and I don't know if it is an issue with the folks at CGPS. In any case, it can be moved to the senior year if necessary.--Ernie 22:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
3. Has there been agreement to the notion of allowing individual study to count as a part of the MIS program for graduate credit? I don't recall that the MIS program has an individual study option currently, but I may be wrong about that.
We're hoping there will be an agreement on that issue, but there are enough other courses to take. The MSMIS as a required course MMIS 590 - MIS Research Project (3 credits), but I think that is thought of as a capstone course in the MSMIS program. --Ernie 22:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
4. Regarding CPSC 470 topics courses, am I correct in assuming that whether these will be cross listed will be determined on a case by case basis? If so, what's the decision making process? Or is the approach that any CPSC 470 topics course would be cross listed as a 500-level MIS class?
Again, we haven't reached any formal agreement on that. We're hoping that any/all of the CPSC 470 courses will be accepted at CGPS. If it is a case-by-case basis, then it would be worked out by the advisor at MWC and the advisor at CGPS after a student is accepted into the accelerated program. I suppose we can make that a decision by the CGPS program director. --Ernie 22:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
5. These will be cross listed, for example, as CPSC 415/MMIS 5xx (new course number), Artificial Intelligence?
That's the way we'd like to do it. Do you have another suggestion? --Ernie 22:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
6. Finally, MMIS students who are not enrolled as CPSC undergraduates could also take the graduate version of any cross listed class?
Certainly. --Ernie 22:30, 11 October 2006 (EDT)
