Department meeting September 29 2008 3:00 pm
Present: Ernie Ackermann (Ernie), Karen Anewalt (Karen), Trillane Burlar (Trillane), Stephen Davies (Stephen), Diane Ditko (Diane), Schli Hamidi (Schli), Jennifer Polack-Wahl (Jennifer), Ron Zacharski (Ron), Marsha Zaidman (Marsha)
- Marsha moved to approve the minutes from the September 1st meeting. Karen seconded. Motion carried.
- Jennifer states that we are still working with cross-listing MSMIS courses. Marsha will talk with Rosemary to see if we can get this moving along faster.
- Stephen reported on the cross-listing of Math 125. If we taught it we could offer more computer science content in it. We may need adjunct support so we could teach the course every semester. Jennifer says that we do not have the fulltime faculty resources to teach this every semester. Marsha says the advantage of not cross listing is that we would have control over the content. There is no urgency in making this decision.
- Marsha asks if we want to make changes to the program based on exit interviews. The summary of the exit interviews is that they would like more variety. They also preferred more emphasis on Windows OS.
- Regarding the summer session, Jennifer (106) and Karen (348? or the old 370) both would like to teach first summer session. We will need access to another computer lab, given the summer renovations to Trinkle.
- Regarding changes in our major, we want to make any 400 level courses count as an elective.
- Jennifer moved to change the CIS major program modifying the CIS requirement of take 414 to now allow either 414 or 448. Karen seconded. Motion carried.
- Marsha moves to drop Math 122 from the prerequisites of CPSC 320. Stephen seconded. Motion carried
- Regarding departmental honors applications, we decided to follow the old procedure for this semester.
- We will have the Fall Research Symposium the last week of classes, possibly December 1st. Ernie will also work on getting a date for the Spring Symposium.
- Marsha suggested having students produce posters describing the internships they did. Marsha thinks this would raise visibility of internships.
- Luke is arranging an ACM cookout for this weekend.
- Karen reported on a number of Faculty Senate motions. There is one on adding a new criteria for becoming a member of the Senate to people are tenured or have 3 yrs. of experience at UMW. There is a proposal to have 3 adhoc committees, one to come up with a faculty senate website, another to review the faculty handbook in alignment with AAUP, and finally one to conduct survey research for the senate. Jennifer is against the whole committee structure of the website committee. Marsha is opposed to the proposed composition of the committees. There is a motion that the academic affairs committee regarding IB credit.
- Summer Science Institute - both Jennifer and Stephen are interested in doing it. Jennifer will be the guaranteed slot.
- Training for lab aides. If faculty have particular requirements for the lab aides to know, send those requirements to Jennifer.
- Discussion on how independent study requests get approved. Should we minimally have an earlier deadline? Marsha proposes a trial of having proposals for Spring semester due December 12th. Responses due January 13th. We will not accept proposals after December 12th. Karen seconds. Motion carried.
