Faculty Senate Meeting Notes
Sept 5, 2007 4pm
Minutes were approved.
Steve Watkins was elected to serve as the Parliamentarian.
Report from the Acting Provost/VP for Strategy and Policy
Nina said that her primary goal for the year was to build the Office of the Provost through work with the Acting President, VPs, Deans, Chairs, and faculty.
She outlined five additional goals:
1. Improve faculty salaries
2. Work on flexibility for teaching loads. She sees this being accomplished at least in part through the proposed Gen Ed revision as well as the increasing role of the chairs.
3. Changing the role of the department chair in order to improve support for the chairs and to give greater authority to chairs with regards to department budget issues and teaching loads.
4. Improving academic and administrative structures across both campuses including creating uniform policies and procedures, looking at implementing the University Council (whose primary purpose will be to facilitate communication across campuses and to advise the Provost and VPs), creating a small group to develop a plan for university-wide faculty governance (to reflect issues common to all faculty across both campuses; the group may recommend that the CAS Faculty Senate and CGPS Faculty Council will remain).
5. Enhance and improve communication including providing opportunities for faculty to share with one another, setting up a listserv for all full-time faculty, and encouraging groups like the Faculty Senate to develop a Web presence.
Report form the Acting Dean of Faculty
Rosemary had no report and was asked no questions.
Report from the Vice President for Academic Affairs
John reminded everyone that the orientation schedule for first year students was revised this year. He encourages all faculty to email him with comments and reactions to the new schedule. He’s also very interested in student reactions to the freshmen advising materials.
He reminded everyone that the last day to submit a URES form to his office for approval is this Friday, Sept 7.
Review of Committee Reports
Someone asked for clarification on the BLS Committee minutes related to the status of a particular student’s request. As no one from the BLS committee was at the Senate meeting, Steve Fuller will follow up with the committee.
Motion on the Adoption of a New General Education Curriculum
The Senate was invited to ask the Gen Ed Task Group questions of clarification related to the proposed Gen Ed.
The main discussion point was the inclusion/exclusion of the PE requirement and how the Task Group arrived at the decision to exclude the PE requirement in the proposed Gen Ed.
The Task Group explained that:
-They reviewed the proposals of the Gen Ed group that met last year and saw no clear consensus to include/exclude the Gen Ed. From discussions on campus, on the wiki, and at the open forums, they felt that faculty was divided on the issue.
-They were working to reduce the overall number of credit hours included in the Gen Ed.
-The PE courses were not viewed as academic courses and the proposed Gen Ed was focused on academic courses.
-Rosemary specifically contacted the chair of the PE department to ask for the department’s opinion on the issue and no opposition to removing the requirement was voiced provided that faculty positions would not be lost and the courses would continue to be offered.
It was suggested that Steve Fuller send email to all faculty reminding them that their voice can still be heard related to the proposed Gen Ed. John Morello will be creating a new area on the Gen Ed Discussion wiki (www.jtmorello.org/gened) and all faculty are encouraged to comment and discuss issues related to the proposal in that forum. Steve was also asked to tell the Curriculum Committee to read and consider all comments that had been previously posted to the wiki or raised in the open forums (which are also posted on the wiki). This suggestion was made so that faculty who had already raised concerns would not have to repost their concerns. Steve will send the suggested email.
Old Business
I asked what happened to the students’ motion about Martin Luther King Day. Steve said that the students had withdrawn their motion but that they will be bringing a new motion about MLK day to the table this year.
