Niemann Scholarship
The Department of Computer Science invites applications for the Ralph A. Niemann Scholarship in Computer Science. Any student majoring in Computer Science who will be a senior and a full-time student for the upcoming Academic Year at the University of Mary Washington may apply.
The scholarship, in the amount of approximately $1,800.00, will be applied to the recipient's tuition next year.
The scholarship is awarded on merit and given to a person who possesses an academic standing and personal traits of distinction which emulate the high standards of achievement exhibited by Mr. Niemann during his lifetime. Mr. Niemann was head of the Warfare Analysis Department and assistant technical director at NSWC. He had many technical and managerial accomplishments during his career. He worked with a team of scientists at Harvard University which developed the AIKEN Relay Calculator Mark II, his department at Dahlgren evolved into what is considered the Navy's leading computational and analysis installations, and was a leader in the development of the Equal Employment Opportunity program at NSWC. Additionally, he was a leader in his community and provided service to the community during his lifetime.
SWIFT Scholarship
The Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunications, Inc., with its U.S. Operating Centre in Culpeper, VA, has generously funded scholarships of approximately $1,500.00 to be awarded to each of two current computer science majors.
The following are the criteria for selection of the recipients.
- The recipients will have declared Computer Science as their major area of study.
- The recipients will receive the grant, initially, at the beginning of their junior year.
- The recipients must have a demonstrated financial need.
- The recipients must have, and maintain, an overall cumulative grade point average of 2.5 and at least 3.0 within the Computer Science major.
- Primary consideration will be given to students residing in the counties of Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania, Fauquier, the City of Fredericksburg, or the Northern Virginia area.
- Selection of recipients will be the responsibility of the Associate Dean for Financial Aid in consultation with the Chairman of the Computer Science Department.
- The scholarship will be renewable for the recipients' senior year of study if all criteria still can be met.
The scholarships shall be awarded before the end of the current semester and will be applied towards the recipients' next year's fees.
Edwards Scholarship
The Department of Computer Science invites applications for the Don and Kathleen Edwards Scholarship in Computer Science .
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must have declared Computer Science as his or her major field of study. Preference shall be given to a student who is a resident of the state of Virginia, with demonstrated financial need, and demonstrated academic excellence in his or her studies. In the event that no applicant completely meets the above criteria, the scholarship will be awarded to the student most closely meeting the spirit of the criteria.
The amount of the scholarship ($850.00 last year), will be applied to the recipient's tuition for the upcoming academic year.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwards have been generous supporters of the University of Mary Washington both with their time as well as their personal resources. Both Mr. and Mrs. Edwards have served as distinguished members of the University of Mary Washington faculty and staff for many years. Mrs. Edwards has been the Director of Computer Support for the Office of College Advancement. Mr. Edwards is the training and development coordinator for the Department of Information Technologies and has also taught Computer Science courses at the College since 1977.
Alumni Scholarship
The Department of Computer Science invites applications for the Alumni Scholarship in Computer Science.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a rising junior or senior who has declared Computer Science as his or her major field of study, and who has demonstrated excellence in Computer Science studies.
The award may be renewed for up to one year.
The amount of the scholarship, approximately $900.00, will be applied to the recipient's tuition for the next academic year.
Alumni of our Computer Science program have been generous supporters of Mary Washington College, the Univeristy of Mary Washington, and the Computer Science Department. This scholarship, funded through the generosity of our alumni and friends, recognizes that support.
