Department meeting November 24 2008 3:00 pm
Present: Ernie Ackermann (Ernie), Karen Anewalt (Karen), Trillane Burlar (Trillane), Stephen Davies (Stephen), Diane Ditko (Diane), Schli Hamidi (Schli), Jennifer Polack-Wahl (Jennifer), Ron Zacharski (Ron), Marsha Zaidman (Marsha)
- Ernie motioned to accept the minutes of the November 2 meeting. Karen seconded. Motion passed.
- Marsha reported on her meeting with the dean.
- Stephen gave us an update on the holiday party on December 5. There will be car pool sign up next week.
- Karen motioned that we contribute $25 to the Faculty Senate. Stephen seconded. Motion passed.
- Jodie will give us new combinations to the lab.
- Marsha has no update on the department website.
- Karen reports on the external web presence. Karen and Marsha will meet with some students to see what they would like on the site-- club announcements, club officers, etc.
- Marsha did not rework the proposal for the curriculum committee. Jennifer thinks that 310 should go down to 3 credits. Ernie says are past the deadline for changing it for this year. We could do it for Fall 2010.
New Business
- We thank Trillane for his work as a department representative.
- Karen reports on the faculty senate.
- She encourages people to come to the next Senate meeting on December 3rd at 4pm.
- There is a Senate Motion to get one of the two senators at large to be members of a steering committee on strategic planning.
- The academic affairs committee recommended getting minors on the campus. This will come up for discussion on January 28th. A minor would consist of 4-6 courses.
- Faculty organization came back with two ad hoc committees--one for a website and one for handbook review.
- Marsha reports on a meeting with Dan White and George Foster of CSC both on internship and careers opportunities. Marsha mentioned that we have a joint career night with math-- possibly in March.
- There was a brief discussion of reimaging B12. Marsha says that we never signed the service agreement.
- Marsha said she would be willing to be our representative to the Senate.
- We had some discussion of the spring symposium. Ernie suggests April 20th at 4pm.
- UPE Induction is at March 29 at 12:30.
- Honors Showcase is scheduled for March 14 and 16. Ernie suggests we give something away--something that costs $1 or $2. Maybe a pen or highlighter. Stephen suggests getting student presentations. Stephen will work on this. Marsha asks if we want to send letters in advance. Everyone agrees that this would be a good idea.
- Regarding revising the catalog copy, we will work on a draft.

- Marsha brought up the topic of use of individual study classes to fulfill a major program. Stephen says that the existing catalog through inference states that three one-credit individual studies should count but Banner contradicts this. Karen motions that we update the registrars office to sync Banner with what is in the preceding catalog. Stephen seconds. Motion passed. Jennifer motions that upcoming course catalog we would only count 491 for the major only if it is taken for 3 credits only. Stephen seconds. Motion carried.
