The main theme of this meeting was that there are a ton of documents that we all need to review, and quickly, in order to meet certain hard deadlines. To wit:

  • Ernie needs feedback on his modified catalog copy by tomorrow (3/13.)
  • Ernie, Karen, and Jennifer, who are teaching this summer, need to get course descriptions to Marsha for these courses by tomorrow (3/13.)
  • Ernie, Karen, and Jennifer, who are teaching this summer, need to get advertisements/handouts to promote these courses put together in short order, so they can be given to the appropriate target audiences (for 110, 103&104; for 370, 220&230; for 470, 230&321.)
  • The whole department needs to get Marsha feedback about the 5-year strategic plan interim report by next Monday (3/19.)
  • Karen and Stephen need to get freshman seminar proposals, in addition to the accompanying ATC proposals, out for review in time to incorporate feedback and submit by 3/30.

Ernie (and others) expressed that our summer school courses, in addition to our courses in general, need to be better publicized. The aforementioned advertisements/handouts are one approach to this; other approaches include contacting the business department and advertising in the Bullet, both of which Ernie said he would follow up on.

The group believes that students need help completing the MS-MIS application, and that some sort of workshop or open house would be appropriate for this. Marsha will ask Gail about scheduling this. Ernie thinks that the application materials need to be available online as well as hardcopy, and the group agreed.

We deferred the decision about what date to schedule the department retreat until later.

By fiat, we declared that the application deadline for next year's scholarships will be March 30th at 5:00pm.

Stephen was unceremoniously promoted to Director of Departmental Relations, to raucous applause.

Jennifer volunteered to figure out how to sign up for the IBM educational alliance, and to forward instructions for this to Gail.

Ernie took ownership of following up on three sys admin items: XWin software, dual-booting Linux on the machines in B12, and appointing a different default PDF reader on Solaris.

We discussed ideas for a freshman orientation activity, and the best idea that surfaced was a video game activity on a giant screen. Since this would necessitate some of our upperclassmen being here to run the thing, Marsha will check into what it would take to get them permission to move in to campus residences early in the fall.

Action items:

  • Ernie - contact the business department about advertising our summer courses (especially 110) to students who may be interested (especially in the CIS concentration.)
  • Ernie - find out about advertising our summer courses in the Bullet.
  • Someone (Marsha?) - publicize the fact that March 30th at 5:00pm is the deadline for applications for next year's scholarships.
  • Marsha - ask Gail about scheduling a workshop for MS-MIS application, as well as posting the application materials online.
  • Jennifer - give Gail instructions for the IBM educational alliance.
  • Ernie - follow up on XWin, Linux dual-boot, and default Solaris PDF reader w/ Bob Gartland & Co.
  • Marsha - find out whether we can get some CPSC upperclassmen majors to move in to campus residences early this fall, in preparation for an orientation event.
  • Everyone - get Ernie feedback on modified catalog copy by tomorrow (3/13.)
  • Ernie, Karen, and Jennifer - get course descriptions to Marsha for these courses by tomorrow (3/13.)

  • Everyone - get Marsha feedback about the 5-year strategic plan interim report by next Monday (3/19.)
  • Karen and Stephen - get freshman seminar proposals, in addition to the accompanying ATC proposals, out for review in time to incorporate feedback and submit by 3/30.
