Data Analysis

Two ways of answering our core research question:

  1. "card at a time": Determine whether there is a correlation between avg score given to a card (across all users) and avg response time for the card (across all user)
  2. "review at a time": Determine whether there is a correlation between the score of a review and the response time for that review (note: this eliminates all timer people from the data)

Usage data:

  1. How often did people use it per day (between the two groups)?

Survey:

  1. See which items are significantly different between two groups

Our vocab test:

  1. Total score -- diff between groups?
  2. Is there a correlation between the avg score for a Magpie card and the frequency with which it was gotten correctly on the test?
  3. <strike>For a given user, is there a correlation between their avg score for the card and whether they got it card?</strike>

Midterm test:

  1. Total score -- diff between groups?

Key Current SRS Systems

  • SuperMemo
    • Clearly the most important SRS in the research world.
    • Uses the "SuperMemo" family of algorithms
      • SM-2
      • SM-11
      • Overview
      • While I can't find any information specifically stating the SM-11 is the current algorithm, I can't find any mention of a later algorithm.
    • Complex interface
    • License: Proprietary
    • Platform Availability:
      • Desktop: Windows
      • Mobile: PalmOS, Pocket PC
      • Web: There's an online version, but it's a mess.
  • Anki
    • Based on the SM-2 algorithm
    • Fairly heavy footprint
    • Fairly complex, although some things are simplified compared to SuperMemo
      • For Example, the "0-5" grading system has been simplified to a "0-3" system ("Again", "Good", "Easy", "Very Easy").
