ITunes library to csv

How to convert an iTunes library listing (.txt) to a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

Software needed: iTunes 7.5 and one of the following: Microsoft Excel (2003 or 2007), Google Docs, or OpenOffice.org Calc.

Export Playlist

(Tested with iTunes 7.5)

To export an iTunes playlist: 1. Open iTunes

2. In iTunes, select 'Music' under 'Library'

3. Click 'File' then 'Export':

- choose appropriate location to save to
- under 'file name' choose appropriate file name
- under 'save as type' choose 'Text files (*.txt)'
- click 'save'

Microsoft Excel

(Tested with Excel 2003 and Excel 2007)

If you have not exported iTunes playlist, see Export Playlist

1. Start Excel

2. In Excel, click 'File' then 'Open':

- under file type select 'All Files (*.*)'
- go to location where file is saved
- click 'Open'

3. Text Import Wizard will start:

- Step 1 of 3: Under 'Choose the file type that best describes your data" select Delimited
- click 'Next'
- Step 2 of 3: under 'Delimiters' select 'Tab' and 'Semicolon'
- click 'Next'
- Step 3 of 3: Click 'Finish'

4. Data will now be separated by columns.

- to delete certain data, right click on the column and select 'Delete'

5. Save file as csv:

- click 'File', 'Save As'
- under 'Save as type:' select 'CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv)
- choose appropriate file name and location to save to

6. File is now saved as a Comma Separated Value file

7. To convert .csv to .txt (for readability):

- open text editing program (such as notepad)
- save file as .txt

Google Docs

(Tested with Firefox 2.0.0.9)

1. Login to Google Docs

2. In Google Docs, create a new spreadsheet

3. Import iTunes playlist file into Google Docs:

- in Google Docs, click 'File', 'Import'
- import dialog box will be displayed. Click 'browse' and move to go to place where iTunes playlist file is saved.
- file will be imported. Click 'open now'

4. To delete unnecessary info:

- select desired column
- right click and click 'Delete Column'

5. To save as CSV:

- click 'File', 'Export'
- select .csv

6. Exported .csv file will be displayed

7. Save page as .txt:

- in web browser click 'File', 'Save Page As'
- select appropriate file name and location to save to
- save file extension as .txt for readability

OpenOffice.org Calc

(Tested with OpenOffice.org Calc Portable 2.2.1)

1. Import playlist file into OpenOffice.org Calc

Text Import Wizard
- under Separator Options Separated by, select 'Tab' and 'Comma'
- click 'Ok'

2. To delete unnecessary information, right click column, then click 'Delete Columns'

3. Save file as .csv

- click 'File', 'Save as'
- select desired location to save to
- select desired file name
- under 'Save as type' select 'Text CSV (.csv)'
- select 'Edit filter settings'
- click 'Save'
- a dialog box will appear '...Do you want to save the document in this format a anyway?' select 'Yes'
- under 'Field delimiter' select , (comma)
- optional: text delimiter. select " or '
- select 'Save cell content as shown'
- click 'Ok'

4. To convert .csv to .txt (for readability):

- open text editing program (such as notepad)
- save file as .txt
