Department meeting December 3, 2007 3pm

Present: Ernie Ackerman (Ernie), Karen Anewalt (Karen), Gail Brooks (Gail), Trillane Burlar (Trillane), Stephen Davies (Stephen), Jennifer Polack-Wahl (Jennifer), Sam Jones (Sam), Ron Zacharski (Ron), Marsha Zaidman (Marsha), Juliette Zerick (Juliette)

Old Business

  1. Gail talked about promoting the MIS program. How can we get the word out about the accelerated program? Julliette feels that most students do not understand the difference between standard degree and this accelerated program. A brochure might help.
  2. Ernie made a motion to accept the November minutes; Karen seconded. Minutes approved
  3. We agreed that Revised Documentation Guidelines will be discussed at the retreat.
  4. We had a general discussion of existing courses and inclusion in proposed Gen Ed categories. All proposals must be submitted to John Morello by January 30 (the earlier the better) and will be acted on by the appropriate adhoc committee by February 29.
    1. We agreed that QR proposals should be ready for Department Review by January 8 intermediate
    2. All other proposals should be ready for department review by the 16th.
    3. The list of these courses are as follows
      1. Quantitative Reasoning: CPSC 110, 220, 230,--Zaidman 125, 326--Ackermann
      2. Experiential Learning: CPSC 430 (MSCS 530--this is CGPS course)--Polack; CPSC 391--Zacharski (MSCS 591--this is CGPS course).
      3. Arts, Literature, and Performance: Game Programming
      4. Freshmen Seminar: FSEM 100: Davies, Polack, Anewalt
      5. Global Inquiry: 104--Ackermann and Zacharski others???????
  5. The Holiday Party is set for December 7
  6. Department Social Gatherings: Jan. 16 (3-4), Feb. 13 (3-4), and April 9.
  7. We had a general discussion about funding for ACM and PERL sponsored events.
  8. Karen reports that the Faculty Senate will be voting on the merit pay policy and raising the cap on what can count as a major to 48 credits.
  9. Ron will get a list to Karen on those students who are currently in 405 and completed 401. Karen will be conducting focus group exit interviews with these students.

New Business:

  1. Thank you to Sam Jones for serving as CPSC Department Representative.
  2. Marsha described some of the proposed plans for Trinkle renovations
  3. The CPSC Spring Symposium will be on_April 9 at 3pm. Ron is to reserve a room
  4. UPE Induction will be on April 6
  5. Honors Showcase Saturday, March 29, 2008 --will need volunteers for Saturday
