Department meeting December 12, 2007 10am

Present: Ernie Ackerman (Ernie), Karen Anewalt (Karen), Stephen Davies (Stephen), Jennifer Polack-Wahl (Jennifer), Ron Zacharski (Ron), Marsha Zaidman (Marsha)

  1. Ernie gave a system report. Every student will be given a database on the department's db server. We had a general discussion of lab software requirements for next semester.
  2. Marsha recommends that the faculty member who coordinates system related matters get a course release. Marsha will talk to the dean about this.
  3. General discussion of course offerings for Fall 2008.
    1. This semester we offered 103, 104, 110, 125, 220, 230, 270, 320, 330, 326, 405, 370, 415, and 430.
    2. Stephen brought up the idea of teaching an introduction to database class using Microsoft Access for students without programming experience. The general feeling is that this should be offered as a new course.

  4. Short discussion of course prerequisites.
  5. Trinkle renovations. David Dean would prefer keeping the raised floor. Ernie stated he would like work space for people working in groups. Number one priority is to renovate the lab. Classrooms (for ex. B52) should have power. We want open space instead of B12. What is currently in B12 shifts over. We lower the floor in B13. We would like to combine B11 and B12; and B13 and B14 and have an open area by the elevators (tables along perimeter, and chairs etc.). Reconfigure B6, B7, and B8 into 2 classrooms.
  6. Ernie described the web oriented courses: e-commerce, 370k (web server applications), 470S (AJAX) and talked about how they applied to CIS.
  7. Stephen will coordinate a reception for graduating seniors.
  8. New course offerings
    1. Karen presented a proposal for CS100, Digital Storytelling. Everyone thought it was a great idea. Could be writing intensive.
    2. Jennifer presented a proposal for 310, Computer Information Systems and its relationship to global inquiry.
