CollexQuestionsToAsk
From MWCSWiki
Questions to ask when we find someone who knows:
- Is it true that linguists get multiple native speakers to separately put data into Toolbox? Is there a way of merging these databases so this data is not all lost?
- With underdocumented languages, how often is it the case that there are inflectional forms? (Or is that mostly just a romance-and-germanic-languages thing?)
- How important is it for linguists to be able to track word forms, and which ones go with which lemmas?
Rebecca's questions 10/9
List of question for Judith:
- synonyms (does this mean "pretty much exact" or "related"?)
- conceptual grouping (is this useful?)
example:
- roles a person can have (example: father, mother, teacher, plumber)
- items in the domestic sphere (example: couch, fork, carpet, basket, bathroom)
- food (example: flat pancake thing)
- body parts (example: hand, foot)
- abstract concepts (example: hope, fear, humor)
- Note that I am using the term "phrase" in a way that might not be linguistically sound. When I say Phrase I am referring to a Lexical Unit that is composed of several Words but has more more or different meaning than simply the sum of the words. For example, "traffic light" or "by the way" or "holy toledo." It might be better to eliminate this distinction I have made between Words and Phrases and instead simply have "Lexical Units." (Do you foresee us getting into trouble if we go one way of the other?)
- grid display (is this useful? what would be useful?)
- native speaker personal profiles (would you like more info about them? should we add things to our list? )
- native speaker entries (what type of data would you like to get from them about each entry? should we add things to our list?)
- our WordNet plan (thoughts? feelings? concerns?)
- in general, is there broad consensus for a particular language on what the lemma "is"? (e.g., in English it's the infinitive for verbs.) Or are users likely to have different opinions about that.
Broad questions:
- What needs or concerns are out there that you think we are not addressing?
- Is there anything in out plan that seems off the mark or not relevant?
- Are there any common pitfalls that you want to warn us about?
- Are there any resources that you steer us towards?
