Survey sending process

As of 4/28/2010:

  1. Spreadsheet 1 (now called "round1") had every 10th Carnegie school, plus every fifth from the Polack list from A through Z (except some "Univ of ..." schools that were deferred to round 2.) Emails were sent to every one of these schools with a program.
  2. Spreadsheet 2 (now called "round2") had every fifth missing "Univ of ..." school from Polack list, plus every third of the remaining Polack list from A through "Univ of Wisconsin - Superior".
  3. Currently, spreadsheet "CollegeInfo1" has all the missing ones from spreadsheet 2, plus every third of the Polack schools from "Univ of Wisconsin - Superior" to Z, plus three extra which were random referrals.

Procedure for adding Carnegie info to spreadsheet

This information is all added to the "big_sheet" spreadsheet, which has two sheets: "survey" and "carneg". Note that column J of the "survey" sheet should be identical to column A of the "carneg" sheet. When new survey data comes in (i.e., when surveymonkey acquires additional entries beyond what's already in the "survey" sheet), they should be appended to the end of the "survey" sheet, leaving all existing "sheet" rows intact. The names for these newly responding schools (which will be in column J once they are pasted in) should be copied to column A of the "carneg" sheet. Then, for each of these newly responding schools:

  1. Go to http://classifications.carnegiefoundation.org/lookup_listings/institution.php.
  2. Use the search to find the school you're looking for. Then find:
    1. "public/private" under control
    2. "enrollment profile" under enrollment profile
    3. "selectivity" under undergraduate profile
    4. "transfer rate" under undergraduate profile
    5. "size" under size and setting
    6. "basic" under basic
    7. "ugrad program classification" under undergrad instructional program

Carnegie info

  • Public/private
  • Ugrad program classification (A&S, A&S+P, balanced, P+A&S, P)
  • Enrollment
  • Selectivity
  • Transfer In
  • Size (L/M/S, etc.)
  • Basic

Summary of feedback:

  • Dept chair may not be able to answer questions. (adding verbiage to email)
  • Subject line needs to be more catchy. (will change!)
  • Need definitions:
    • CS0 - an introductory course with no prerequisites, involving at least some programming, that does not count towards the major
    • CS1 - the first required course in the major programming sequence
    • CS2 - the second required course in the major programming sequence (traditionally called "Data Structures")

Misti:

Q5: Do at least some of your courses teach the use of an interactive

debugger? As written, this would be a single yes/no question instead of the three listed. It should probably read more like "Do you teach an interactive debugger in any of the following classes:"

And there's no software engineering degree listed! ;);) I really wanted to put that because I'm proud of it :D:D

Misti: also, depending upon what you're wanting out of it, the first intro line on the survey might say survey on introductory computing practices

Stephen: ah! good call

so another thing that we've been debating is "the definition of CS0"

i am biased to think of it in a particular way, because of the way we do it at umw

do you think that the definition given in question #2 is kinda sorta standard?

Misti: that's exactly how I think of it

I think to count as CS0, it must involve some way of implementing an algorithm

even Alice is okay

Look for both CS and CIS programs. If there's no separate CIS department/program, but the school offers a CIS degree within the CS program, we still want to know that fact. If there is a separate CIS department/program, then we want to send them a separate survey.

  • COB vs COE vs CAS A&S, professional, A&S professional (undergraduate instructional program)
  • size of institution (size & setting)
  • public vs private (this is listed per school on the results list)
  • type of degree (basic classification)
  • part-time vs full-time, transfer (undergraduate profile classification)
