Introduction to the course wiki

Elements of wiki:

  • everything is editable
  • every revision is preserved and revertable
  • everything is discussable via comments appended to pages
  • documents can be personal statements or instruments of collaboration
  • every page can be tagged with multiple tags (more on this later)
  • when in doubt, click around

In-class and homework assignment:

  • In addition to editing the class wiki to add their names to reading assignments, students will set up their own wikis that will be used as personal learning journals.
  • Students will create their own wikis at pbworks and set them up as private wikis. At the end of the semester, students will give course instructor and readers privileges to read their wiki. Students can grant reading privileges to anyone they choose, but only the student should be given editing rights to that student's wiki.
  • Students should use their personal wiki pages between class meetings to take notes and post your questions about the readings prior to the next class meeting.
  • On most class meetings, some time of class time will be reserved for making diary-like notes about what you've learned in the personal learning journal section of student wiki pages.
