Suzanne:
- Loved the tool.
- Thinks a major value add is just that it gives students a place to plan and encourages them to think ahead.
- It's available online, and not on paper where it can get lost, etc.
- Great potential for:
- EDUC program students
- Double-majors
- (presumably) minors
- "I don't really need the tool to track requirements and prereqs. Banner Degree Eval does that fine." (Probably because an experienced advisor like Suzanne already knows all the MATH requirements.)
- "Freshmen just plain need to start thinking and planning, and this tool encourages them to do that. Many aren't used to thinking ahead -- their parents chose their courses, for example." **
- Tool is best used in conjunction with advisors, not students on their own.
- Could design an interface for the registrar people to enter requirements, etc, to keep in sync with Banner.
Rettinger:
- Didn't really use the tool. His theory is that math/cpsc types are just more likely to explore new technology. **
- Not useful for majors in which you can never get into classes anyway. (like psyc!)
- If you can't get integrated with Banner, you might as well not even do it.
Stephen:
- tightness in schedule is what makes the tool useful. For instance:
- majors with lots of prereqs (e.g., CPSC, MATH)
- double-majors
- students who come to a major late in the game (and ask: "can i still do this in four years?")
- minors
- EDUC program students
- transfer students (only have general credits)
Future directions:
- Use info about how many students have planned on certain courses in certain semesters to drive course offerings.
Stephen's opinion:
- For freshmen, the system is useful merely because it encourages students to think and plan ahead.
- For soph/juniors, the system is useful because it helps them actually make a viable plan towards graduation, and checks all constrants.
- For seniors, the system isn't useful.
