BS Computer Science/Accelerated MSMIS Degree Programs

Students may apply to the MSMIS program when the following criteria are met:

  • The student has satisfactorily completed at least 60 undergraduate credits.
  • The student's completed credits and those in which currently enrolled total at least 75 credits toward his/her undergraduate degree program.
  • The student's completed credits and those in which currently enrolled total at least 21 credits toward his/her undergraduate computer science major.
  • The student has a minimum 3.0 overall GPA at CAS-MWC.
  • The student has a minimum 3.25 GPA in courses completed in satisfaction of a computer science major at CAS-MWC.

Students may apply by submitting the following materials by November 1:

  • A completed MSMIS application to CGPS Admissions
  • 3 faculty recommendation letters (2 of these 3 must be from CAS-MWC computer science faculty.)

Requirements:

  • CAS-MWC students conditionally accepted into the MSMIS program must meet all MSMIS admission requirements upon completion of their BS degree with a major in Computer Science (CPSC) to change to degree status. We will use BSCPSC to refer to the undergraduate degree.
  • In order to receive an MSMIS degree, these students must meet all MSMIS degree requirements.
  • The foundation course requirements may be met from designated undergraduate courses or their equivalent. Courses intended to meet foundation requirements must be approved by the student's CAS-MWC CPSC faculty advisor and his/her CGPS-MSMIS faculty advisor. Students must earn a grade of ‘B’ or higher in each of these courses.
  • A maximum of 12 approved UMW credits may be applied toward both undergraduate (BSCPSC) and graduate (MSMIS) degree requirements. The approved 12 credits may fulfill the MSMIS core or elective requirements, and may be used to satisfy the BSCPSC requirements. A grade of B or better must be received in each course in order to have the credits apply toward the MSMIS degree program.

Conditional Acceptance into the MSMIS Program:

  • Students will be notified of conditional acceptance before January 1.
  • Students must meet with their assigned MSMIS degree faculty advisor after conditional acceptance into the program and before the beginning of the following semester to fill out the BSMS curriculum plan.
  • The BSMS curriculum plan outlines the courses planned or already taken to meet the MSMIS requirements.
  • The BSMS curriculum plan outlines the additional courses planned after the completion of the BS degree to complete fulfillment of the degree requirements.
  • Each BSMS curriculum plan must be signed and dated by the student, his/her MSMIS degree advisor and his/her CAS-MWC major advisor.

Appendix A. A Guide for students (Preliminary)

For example, computer science majors may satisfy the foundation courses by completing:

  • Fulfills the CTEC 301 or CTEC 302 or CTEC 303 6 credit foundation requirement
    • CPSC 220—Computer Science I
    • CPSC 230—Computer Science II-Data Structures
  • AND Fulfills the BPST 316 3 credit foundation requirement
    • MATH 200—Introduction to Statistics OR
    • CPSC 320—Statistics for Computer Scientists OR
    • ECON 361—Introductory Econometrics OR
    • BUAD 353—Decision Analysis
  • AND Fulfills the LRSP 301 6 credit foundation requirement
    • SOCI 342 – Sociology of Work: Occupations and Professions

For example, students may fulfill the BSCPSC and MSMIS dual credits by completing CPSC 501—Organization of Programming Languages, CPSC 505—Operating Systems, and 6 credits of pre-approved BSCPSC courses, or MMIS courses.
