UNDER COSTRUCTION, PLEASE SEE THIS POST IN RESERVE COPY

Present: Ernie Ackermann (Ernie), Karen Anewalt (Karen), Aaron Clemmer (Aaron), Stephen Davies (Stephen), Jennifer Polack-Wahl (Jennifer), Ron Zacharski (Ron) and Marsha Zaidman (Marsha).

Absent: Schli Hamadi

  1. Ernie made a motion to approve the 2 November minutes. Jennifer seconded. Motion passed.
  2. Department meeting with Jay Harper: None of the dates in December work for Jay. We’re looking at January now. Look for a new Doodle poll soon.
  3. Summer School Update: All of the courses were approved by John Morello. He’s very skeptical that all of them will get the required enrollment (7 students) but is willing to list them and see what happens with the understanding that courses that do not have 7 students enrolled will be cancelled. Ernie: 104 (1st) Ben Forbes: 110 (2nd) & 125 (2nd) Stephen: 448 (1st) & 105 (2nd) Marsha: 302 (1st) Any plans to drum up business? Marsha says that for upper division classes we should announce them in our classes. Ernie says we should suggest this during advising sessions. Marsha says that we get students from other schools. Stephen says this is more applicable to Ben's courses.
  4. Summer Science Institute Update. Turned in Marsha for the guaranteed slot + Stephen & Jen if space permits. Karen hasn’t heard back from Ray Scott
  5. Curriculum Proposal Updates. All Curriculum Committee proposals approved
    1. Minor wording:
      1. Requirements for the minor in Computer Science (20 credits):
      2.     * CPSC 220
      3.      * CPSC 230
      4.      * Any three (3) CPSC courses numbered 300 or above, for a total of at least 9 credits
      5.      * Any additional CPSC course, of at least 3 credits, numbered 100 or higher
    2. Change CIS to require BUAD 353 or BUAD 300
    3. Change catalog wording to make it more clear that students can only take MMIS and MSCC courses if they have been provisionally accepted into the MSMIS program (proposal attached on pages 6-9 FYI)
    4. Emergency SI application for CPSC 302 - approved
  6. Newsletter update: Jodie asked Design Services if we need to use the same template for future newsletters. She has not heard back.
  7. Upcoming Social Events. Winter Wonderland (planned by PERL). Dec 4 7-10pm in the Red Room. Potluck appetizers and desserts. They request faculty bring paper products.
  8. Senate motions/issues: Ernie reports that FOC recommends that nothing go to the Senate from that committee. The incomplete issue is still pending. BOV approved raising tuition.
  9. CAS Strategic Plan. Marsha reports that Terry Kennedy is asking for suggestions for a non-residential summer camp for high school students. It would align with the second summer session. They are trying to get students here on campus to get them to view this as a good place. The salary for the faculty will be around $1000/wk. Regarding the strategic plan, they are done with the draft of the mission statement. Committees are now assigned.
  10. We should look at some schools that have implemented a one course = one credit model to see how they handle the CPSC major. See list on page 4. Should we split this up and pick a time to discuss? There are 23 schools known to have a one credit model. One question was related to disciplines like chemistry which have extended labs. Jennifer is doing 1-4 on the list; Ron 5-8; Karen 9-11; Stephen 12-15; Marsha 16-19; Ernie 20-23. One goal is to see what courses are in the major. We will discuss this at our next meeting on 29 January. Marsha said this came up at the fireside chat.
  11. Outcomes Assessment Update/Alumni Survey. Ron sent several emails to Sean O'Brien asking him whether we need to do an alumni survey and whether we can have a separate assessment plan for the CIS major and has not heard back.
  12. Discussion of outcomes – What big picture goals do we have for students getting a CPSC degree? How should we be measuring them? Marsha suggests looking at the ACM curriculum guides. Marsha thinks we already have objectives. Ron will email Iowa State's plan.
  13. Course offerings and whether or not 330 needs to be offered every semester – any report from the committee? Marsha handed out copies of the course sequence tables and she walked us through these tables. Stephen says the main thing we are considering is offering 330 in the spring. His take is that if you take 110 in semester 1, 2, or 3 you can graduate within 8 semesters. If you take 110 in 4 or 5 you will graduate a year late. Ernie says that if we have multiple sections it will give students more flexibility regarding when people take it. Marsha says that offering 330 only in the spring makes the schedule more rigid. Right now fall courses are 310 (c), 326 (t), 405 (t), 430; spring courses are 305 (t), 401 (t), 330, 350. Ernie made a motion that we offer 330 in the spring only for two years. Jennifer seconds. Motion carried.
  14. Exceptions to the major for David Reichert, David Young, Rebecca Graham
    1. Rebecca Graham – Needs 414 which isn’t being offered Karen/Stephen suggested taking 470 Semantic Web – she’s doing that. Needs 310 which isn’t being offered. Jennifer suggested BUAD 259 Research Methods in BUAD – Rebecca is taking that.
    2. David Young – Needs 414 which isn’t being offered (and is already taking Semantic Web as his 400 level elective) Is applying to the accelerated MSMIS program and taking MMIS 500 Management Information Systems.
    3. David Reichert – Needs 414 which isn’t being offered (and is already taking Semantic Web for his 400level elective). Jennifer suggested MSMIS 500 or 540. He wanted to take 540. Has to be provisionally accepted into the MSMIS program to count the course toward the BS. Gail said that MMIS 540 is crosslisted as CIST 440 & suggested that he take that. He’s signed up for it. We all agree that we should suggest to Mr. Reichert that he apply for the MMIS program. Another possibility is to take an individual study.
  15. Applying for “all instructors” designation for speaking intensive (SI) courses not already carrying this designation. Do we want to do this for 270, 310, and 348? Stephen says that 270 having an all instructor SI designation is odd. We are in favor of 310 being SI but not 348. Marsha wonders if we can make 348 writing intensive. The general opinion is no.
  16. Update on Bluhost website. Karen is now allowed to make changes to the website and is waiting for a contribute key. Aaron reports on some ideas he had. For example, there might be task-based navigation. We will have a static site that links to the Bluhost site. A major goal is to have a latest news section and a calendar. Ernie says the issue is what is easy to update. The whole problem is finding the time to do the content. Aaron says wouldn't it be cool to have member profiles - like the face board; and have an alumni message board. Perhaps we can get a student to do this in the spring.
